 Micro weddings: The new norm?

May 9, 2022

Are large weddings where your distant cousin gets a +1 a thing of the past? Probably not, but covid certainly forced many couples in 2020 to either re-schedule their big day or cut their guest list significantly, pushing them towards having a micro wedding. Couples like Britney and Jordon planned for a more traditional wedding at a venue in the mountains, but ended up having an intimate micro wedding at a beach house in Orange County. It might not have been their first choice, but it turned out exactly how it was supposed to, leaving them grateful that they were able to celebrate with only their closest loved ones.

Heres why I think you should consider a micro wedding:

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a big traditional wedding. I love a big party, but sometimes a more intimate celebration of your love is a better fit.

  1. It’s the safest way to have a wedding during a pandemic

Although most covid restrictions have been lifted, this pandemic has left a lot of people anxious about large crowds. Having a smaller gathering might ease some of your guests anxieties and allow you to navigate changing restrictions more easily.

  2. It increases your budget

You can still have your dream wedding. A smaller guest list doesn’t mean you have to cut out everything, in fact, it might allow you to focus on things you couldn’t before. Like the table decor you dreamt of, but couldn’t afford for 100+ guests. A smaller guest list means less of a financial burden on you and your partner and more room to budget for other things.

  3. no strangers

Im a big believer in a “no strangers” guest list. It ensures that you will be surrounded by only your closest friends & family on one of the biggest days of your lives. When the wedding is small it’s easier for people to understand why they weren’t invited and eases some of that guilt.

  4. A more laid back day

A more intimate wedding day means less pressure to put on a show. Being surrounded by a large crowd can feel a bit over whelming, so having less people allows you to stay in the moment and remember how you felt.

  5. More venue options

Having a micro wedding gives you so many more venue options! An Airbnb in the woods? Perfect for you and your 30 person guest list. You, your partner and 20 of your closest loved ones on an Oregon beach? Intimate, effortless and you most likely wont need a permit.

Heres a look into Britney & Jordons micro wedding day

June 13, 2020

Seal Beach, CA

One location

One location meant everyone was where they needed to be when they needed to be there. Jordon and his friends got ready down stairs, sharing a beer & some fond memories, while Britney and her gals got dolled up in the main bedroom upstairs.

First touch vs. First look

Britney wanted the first time Jordon saw her in her wedding dress to be when she was walking down the aisle, but still wanted “first look” photos. When she recommended, doing a “first touch” instead, I was all for it! It allowed them to have a moment together before the ceremony without spoiling the surprise and it was the sweetest thing ever.

A rooftop ceremony

The ceremony was held on the rooftop of the beach house. You could hear the waves crashing in the distance and see birds flying up above while Britney & Jordon said “I DO.” It was a beautiful moment of love & commitment. Choosing to have the ceremony on the rooftop allowed it to feel private, while still getting that “wedding on a beach” feel.

A moment to document just the two of them

Your wedding day goes so by so quickly. It’s important to give you and your partner some time to slow down just the two of you during the day. Britney & Jordon were able to step away to the beach during cocktail hour to spend some time alone.

A party by the sea

Britney & Jordon shared their first dance on the deck over looking the ocean surrounded by their closest loved ones. The party continued through the evening; All you could hear over a perfectly curated playlist were the waves crashing in the distance and laughs from great friends and family. To end an absolutely perfect day, the now married couple was sent off with a firework display and a sparkler send off.
